THEY WERE TEMPTED NEARLY TO CORRECT HIM. they served hell! lucifer! all the REAL, pretty greater demons. not this cheap knock off PRETENDING to be one of them and orgasming pathetically to the fake power trip. “of course,” the demon said with a honey smile and bat of their eyelashes. he loved to bring it up! whenever he could! how could they ever forget? but they bit their tongue.
“but…” they struggled to contain their glee. “this reminds me.” anything to be an inconvenience. ANYTHING. “i found a few dozen contracts filed improperly…. that you need to sign off on.” one by one.
LIPS PRESSED INTO A THIN-LINE at the final statement. they were already on thin-ice. now, it seemed that they PUSHED themselves over the edge. did they really expect ky to sign off on IMPROPER filed contracts? that was what someone far LOWER than him would do; maybe someone who had time to look over every bit of the contract. not ky’lar. not right now.
“remind someone else.” instead of elaborating on who they should find, ky decided to make a motion with his hands; pointing behind them. “you know, someone who ACTUALLY cares.”
THEY OUGHT TO HAVE EXPECTED THAT . the demon glanced away , instead . some , they thought , were a bit more charmed by some cheek than outright groveling . but not him ! even to , of all things , a demon , he was out of his mind . worse than most greater demons . most . greater demons were at least predictable . he was not . “yeah , i got it ,” they replied . they knew already they were pathetic , so it was not much on their pride to act on it . “i’ll make sure no other , um , mix ups happen again .”
BEING PREDICTABLE WAS INSULTING. the moment he started having actions that could be predicted was the moment he’d lose his edge. if they grovelled a bit more maybe he’d have at least thought of giving a decent amount of thought to forgiveness, but why do that? he may not have had all the power he boasted about, but he’d get it one way or another. “ good. ‘cause if it does… you’ll wish you’d never been made. ”
THIS WASN’T FINE.
yeah, they were fucked! screwed! damned! more damned than they were ALREADY DAMNED! it wasn’t their fault! what did anyone expect out of a bunch of glorified, corporate demons!? waitresses spat in peoples’ food; so could they be exempt from the same impulse?!
“i mean.” they averted their gaze. maybe if they LOOKED liked a kicked bitch, he would take pity on them. “it– it took me forever t’fix my hair this good, th—-at’s a bit unnecessary, right?”
UNNECESSARY.
everything he did could be considered HIGHLY UNNECESSARY, but did he care? no, not really. why even care about the thoughts of someone like them? they were NOTHING – worse than humans. changed into servants (of a sort) and still so IGNORANT of the things at play around them.
“i’ll be the one to DEEM what is unnecessary or otherwise.” his voice sounded disgusted, but it was an act – he didn’t care what they tried to put up as a defense. in truth, it was amusing – he just would NEVER admit that. “got it?”
“IT’S NOT NECESSARY TO HOVER LIKE A HAWK,”SAID THEY. leave it to him! the insect on their shoulder, buzzing in their ear! the one they couldn’t rid themself of! get in hot water a few dozen times, they never left you, did they? “did everything as asked.” better than him, anyway. they’d sell their soul again if they’d be wrong! “i’d recommend putting in a good word in for an actual vacation, though, get with the fuckin’ times.”
LESSER DEMONS WERE DISGUSTING. hovering was not just one way, but the only way to keep them in line. if it was up to ky, he’d never be in their presence, but he didn’t have that luxury. nor did he believe he ever would have – it was just a matter of time before he was forced to be around them once again. “is it now?” the question was asked as ky slipped his hands into the back pockets. “you see, your kind doesn’t deserve anything; maybe in a few more years you might make it to something better, but for now? a twisted grin spread across his lips. “you serve me. get that through your thick head.”
“WELL , WE KIND’A GOTTA KNOW A LOT OF YOU BETTER , SO SORRY ‘F IT GETS LOST IN THE MIX .” they kind of had trouble being able to tell WHO THE FUCK WAS WHO when quaking over every power grabbing and power drunk bitch that sat their ass on something mocking a throne .
“why don’t i just ……………… save it …… for later ……” THIS WAS FINE .
EYES NARROWED TO RESEMBLE A GLARE IN their direction. it was FOOLISH to admit the truth. even for something as simple as that. ky HATED demons – especially when they grated on his nerves. all that BIRTHRIGHT had landed him was IDIOTS trying to get theirselves together around him. it was DISGUSTING.
“or,” he said, a slight grin spreading across his lips as he spoke. “i’ll poor it all over your head.” not that ky would LOWER himself to do such a task, but it was a THREAT all the same.
oh, the PRINCE knew the other was CAUGHT. it was so easy to see it; so easy to TELL these days. not that he CARED about what the lesser’s did. they could do what they WANTED and he wouldn’t bat an eyebrow, but ky’lar always ENJOYEDflaunting his power around. especially when it came to those far LESSER than him. “if you knew me better… you’d know i only drink WHISKEY.” nor did he accept drinks from a DEMON like them, but that was besides the point.
DON’T GET TOO SMART, THEY HAD TOLD THEMSELF, BUT THERE THEY GO AGAIN. running their mouth, tongue unnailed. he had deserved it. he deserved their ire, their spite. he was both lucky and unlucky enough to be a demon through birth. unlucky he was for his wretchedness, but lucky for his rank, to puff himself as proudly as a peacock without reprehension.
“i hope you don’t mind me saying….” soft. innocent. certainly they were stupid; couldn’t they learn to game the system without pissing someone off, or without entering a pissing contest they couldn’t afford!?
“but how could i ever forget, MY LORD, with how often you remind me? i——” GOD HELP ME, THAT WAS STUPID. “not forgetting hasn’t made me smarter.”
HE WANTED SO BADLY TO RIP THE OTHER APART. there was no reason BEHIND THE PERPETUAL want other than it would be AMUSING to hear their SCREAMS. it wouldn’t hurt them — not really, but it would just SHOW THEM THAT RESPECT WAS NEEDED.
in some ways, the only reason he DIDN’T MAKE THE MOVE was due to the fact it would have took far more EFFORT than he was willing to put forward. to rip a demon apart took MOTIVATION . – something that he didn’t quite have at the moment. at least in the amount that was REQUIRED to do such a thing.
“ let me give you some ADVICE, ” his tone was cold. colder than he wished it to be, but it would GET THE JOB DONE. “ learn your PLACE.” he wasn’t done speaking, not by a long shot, but he did make sure to take a step forward as he continued on, “ or you’ll find yourself in WORSE condition than you are already.” it wasn’t a threat, it was more so a promise — he had RIPPED OTHER’S APART for less, but all the same, he was giving a WARNING.
HE HAD SENIORITY DUE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HIS CREATION. besides that, there was NOTHING MORE THAN – LIMITED – ACTIONS that secured his POSITION OVER THEM. the lesser demons who SERVED WITH GLEE; it was their PURPOSE after-all.
ky’lar AFFIRMED HIS POSITION through the usual means of FEAR AND INSULTS; assuring DOMINANCE was key. ALL DEMONS WERE PATHETIC. the lower ones MORE SO THAN ANY OTHER. it didn’t matter HOW they came to be; former humans or otherwise. they served all the same.
“—- you SURE about that?” the question was asked so he could HEAR the words of demon, TO SEE THEM ADMIT THEIR WORTH. they wouldn’t get anywhere — that was already ASSURED. so why not make sure they didn’t have any delusions. “’cause, i don’t think you are.”
OF COURSE LUCIFER WOULDN’T CARE, THEY THOUGHT. “what about demons who were humans?” they asked. they were throwing themself to the wolves and they knew it, but a more subtle dig was apparent. better than humans? well, what did that make him, to be half human!? they shrugged and dipped their head, the picture of innocence. THE HELL THEY BORE WOULD BE ALLEVIATED IF THEY COULD CRUSH HIS EGO EVEN JUST ONCE; to watch him stutter, to squirm, to show DISCOMFORT.
HIS HANDS FORMED INTO TIGHT FISTS at the others question. it always came down to his SPECIES. not exactly human. NOT EXACTLY DEMON EITHER. on most days, ky would SIDE WITH DEMONS. they deserved the world and everything in it. on RARER days, he supported the CLAIM he was HUMAN. something,.. he never would ADMIT — least of all around the one before him. “they…” he started to say WORDS THAT HE KNEW, but they were STUCK IN HIS THROAT. a reason to why he grunted before speaking again, “they must EARN their place.” though, in ky’s personal case, his place was ASSURED… if only by the fact of his FATHER, and less importantly his OWN ACTIONS.
“DEMONS ARE LOW,” SAID THEY. “but now i think about it, that’s not OUR fault. if a creature is lacking, it must be a fault of the creator. therefore the fault is on lucifer; not us. perhaps you would find yourself better off taking your complaint up with them.”
HE WAS ALREADY BORED of the entire CONVERSATION. it didn’t matter to him who MADE DEMONS. they were made and they were flawed. NOTHING IN CREATION WAS PERFECT. “ i highly doubt LUCIFER would care. ” in truth, he DIDN’T CARE EITHER, why should he when things were out of his hands? his COMPLAINTS were minimal at worst… INCONSEQUENTIAL at best, “ we are what we ARE, “ a pause as his voice LOWERED; rehearsed words came spewing out of his mouth as to fit a mold that just didn’t SIT right with him, “ we’re BETTER than humans. ”
