‘ a promise? to what, ritually disembowel the council if they don’t tell you what you want to know? ‘ admittedly, she’s had the very same thought, but she’s kept it mostly to herself. ky, on the other had, was not known for his restraint in such matters.
‘if i have to.’ it wouldn’t be easy, but he thought that if push came to shove… he could do it. of course, if he failed… not even his family could save him from that. ‘either way, i’ll find out what i need to know.’ or find himself with more questions than answers.
‘ there are just some things you’re not meant to know, ky. and threatening me won’t further your goals. ‘
‘i wouldn’t consider it a threat, but rather a promise.’ no, it wasn’t one he’d even go through with, but she was right. far more than he was actually willing to admit. ‘you know how i am with them.’
‘ thank you for the hearts. they were delicious. ‘ lilith wasn’t used to receiving gifts without attachments. she offered him a bottle, one of dark glass and the size of a hearty wine bottle, though sealed with dark red wax. the bow tied around the neck obscured the label a little — but when he moved it out of the way, he’d see it was whisky from 1802; from a ship long thought lost.
‘ seemed fitting. i hope you like it. ‘
it was a rarity that ky ever gave anyone a gift. though, there was exceptions; giving a gift to lilith just happened to catch two-birds with one stone. he got to have fun and he got to give someone a present. true, it wasn’t the best of ways to try to be nice to someone, but it was better than some of his other idea’s.
he took the bottle, glanced at the label, and a full grin spread across his face. true, he usually drank the shit whiskey he could find, but this? oh, he couldn’t just drink it down in one gulp. no, this would be for a very special occasion. ‘oh, i do – more than you know.’ he glanced back to her. ‘i hoped they would work for you. finding people with true heart is rare, but not impossible… if you know where to look.’
‘ no, you’re fine. ‘ she hadn’t meant her initial statement to be one of an attacking tone, but she never knew where she stood with ky — his moods, to her, seemed volatile, unpredictable, though she did always seem to be the enemy. she scooped the hell puppy up and stood, scratching the hound’s chin as she turned to face ky. ‘ if you’re thirsty, there’s a bar over there. ‘ she figured alcohol might be an olive branch. ‘ i won’t keep you. i know you’ve better things to do. ‘
his moods were always unpredictable. they changed quickly – even more so when he was around one’s he had very little interaction with or simply he didn’t trust. to him, it was easier to stay away than try to even establish some sort of general ground between anyone. not to mention it was far less messy.
still, he never could quite turn down a drink. not when that was all he craved (besides getting out of here) for the moment. ‘i’ve always got better things to do.’ avoiding his family was the most important one … especially these days with how badly he ripped apart any sort of decency between all. ‘just never seem to get around to them.’ no, he should have been working – at least attempting to make the demon he worked for at times happy, but instead… he was avoiding that too.
‘ who’s a good boy? you’re a good boy. ‘ purring sweet tones to the hellish creature in front of her, scritching what fur was left, and peppering an exposed skull with kisses. the hellhound’s red eyes closed in pleasure, a skeletal tail wagging back and forth. when lilith heard the footsteps in conjunction with a door shutting, she looked up, keeping a hand on the beast’s neck as it issued a low growl.
‘ well, well. look what the cat dragged in. ‘
‘ an’ here i thought the only thing i would see today was more disappointment,’ he said, tone filled with sarcasm. ‘ let me guess, you want me to leave? ’ to do so would have been a blessing – that way he wouldn’t have to deal with her. maybe then he could find a bar and get drunk. it wouldn’t be a fix, but at least it would help him recover from being in her presence.
‘ so rude to your mother. ‘ now, the term mother doesn’t mean the woman who gave birth to his vessel, or whomever he considered his mother. and at this point, lilith wasn’t even a specific demon’s mother — they bloomed and blossomed like wildflowers, born here, there, and everywhere. she holds her hands out to show she is unarmed. ‘ you ought to be nicer. ‘
‘— yeah, wrong demon for that.’ he wasn’t nice to anyone. when he was, it was due to the fact he wanted something, and nothing else. a reason to why his arms were folded firmly across his chest with a grunt. ‘sorry to disappoint you,’ the last word was said sarcastically, ’mom,’ and an eye roll followed suit.
‘ how very lucky are you then, that i am not one of your kind. ‘ the mother of monsters regarded him with a cool look, though her tone held no malice, just the airiness of one with knowledge looking upon one without. she was blocking the only exit to the room, the petite brunette with dark lips and high-heeled boots — and something told her he wasn’t going to try and push past.
if he had a real choice, he would have been out the door, and on his way already. easier if he just left and spent the rest of the night alone drinking beer. one of the few good things on earth at least. well, one of the few things that had been good to him. though, he never did have a real choice… not in most things, ‘yeah, not that lucky.’ she was in his way after-all.
“i avoid others of my kind for a reason.” rather, he avoided them as he enjoyed being alone. that way, all ky had to worry about was what he would do for amusement, and not what anyone else wanted. “so, unless this is important, i have a very nice close to freezing hotel room to get back to.”
