“of course. without dad steering them with his ‘gentle’ hand on the back of their necks, my siblings are ten times more destructive than a hoard of demons fresh out of hell.” she wipes off the blade and holds it out toward him. “don’t be afraid to use it, but remember that i’m the one that gave it to you.”
“at least hordes of demons,” he said, taking the blade with his right hand, and gripping it tightly. “usually have some sort of leader. they may be destructive, but once they find a demon with power? they flock to it like ants to a crumb on a hot summer’s day.” he then flashed a grin. “among other things, i don’t have any problems with you – it’s the rest of them that strike me as idiotic.” ky never liked heaven – he may have stayed in churches for a few years, but he never believed in it. then again… he didn’t think it mattered. not anymore at least. “maybe a bit rabid as well.”
“ I won’t pretend to be your FRIEND, but perhaps you would be interested in an ally in this mission of yours. ”
“It’s a simple fact that FRIENDS are an unnecessary evil, but don’t worry. I don’t need friends.” A pause. “However, if you wish to help? I have no problems with it. Just be sure to stay out of my way.”
it would not be incorrect to say that buffy summers had not always been the most perceptive of girls, slayer status notwithstanding. but there are some things she’d gotten very good at spotting early. one of which just so happened to be knowing when someone was about to suggest something that she would definitely not like. and so, as he opens his mouth to speak, she’s already lifting a hand to halt his progress, head shaking defiantly.
❛ no, uh-uh, i know that look ——that’s the look that comes before you rope me into doing something we both know i don’t want to do, and you give me that stupid grin that’s too charming and i end up agreeing to it anyway. not this time, pal ——not today. ❜
it’s important to note that while slayer is her title, buffy finds herself in far too friendly situations with all kinds of denizens of the shadows more often than not, and she might be wondering — not for the first time — how she keeps getting into these messes.
‘think of it as simply a way to keep me in line.’ he could have done everything by himself, but at least having buffy there would keep him from possibly killing anyone. still, if she didn’t want to go? well, he wouldn’t force her to, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t at least try to persuade her to do what he wanted.
‘you might not want to go with me, but when you find out where i have gone? well, you’ll get pissed, and i’ll find myself backed in a corner.’ a pause. ‘ a corner, where you’ll most likely want to kill me!’ it might not have been the case, but he was at least laying out things decently for her.
‘all i need is an hour – maybe two.’ he was going for something that he could more than likely call a short amount of time, but time was never something he was good with. sure, an hour wasn’t long to him, but to some? it could have been. a reason to why he sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly. anything to calm him down for the moment. ‘or, you can stop me right now.’
“mmm— somehow, i’m not surprised.” there was no malice or sarcasm behind her words, but maybe a hint of a smile played at one corner of her lips at the memory. soon after, a small nod. “things change, not always for the better, and especially when they turn toxic-” a moment of hesitation as she bit the inside of her cheek, her hands pulling inside of her sleeves. “i’m sorry. about my behavior since then. feelings– they fuck me up, and i really haven’t been in a good place since we separated. i just– i hurt and i get scared. i don’t trust easily these days, and i can’t tell when anyone’s being genuine anymore, even if they’re trying to make up for things. i can’t even tell if moments of making up are genuine, especially when they’re preceded by days of mentioning other…not so great things. it’s just– it’s hard to deal. with everything.”
“things ended the moment my grandfather pulled his shit.” he wasn’t going to elaborate on it. the phone call may not have been what caused ( or even started ) everything to go down hill, but in his mind? it was the official action that caused the shit-show to start. something, that he could have taken far too much credit for, but instead, he decided to avoid talking about it. it was more then likely better for both of them that way.
“after that? well,” he rubbed at his chin for a few moments. “keeping out of trouble doesn’t end up well for someone like me. even more so when i’ve been dragged back home.” not that ky could remember every time he went back – he just knew that it never was pleasant. even more so the last few times he’d met meph. “i thought things would be different by now, but… things never change with my family. especially with meph.”
“Bring it on.” She huffs and tilts her head back slightly and uncrosses her arms. “I can handle anyone.”
“An’ how much are you willing to bed on this?” He asked, taking a step forward. “’Cause, the way I see it? You might be able to handle most, but not anyone an’ not everyone.”
“ You are right you are the first to accept it , others thought it was a trap but it’s not I plan on keeping my end of the deal , something you will not understand it’s about family “ a pause follows as he is swallowing hard hands falling to the sides of his body.
“family is… important.” he knew that was the case – he didn’t have to be human to even understand that little tidbit of information. no, all ky had to do was have some sort of decency to see what many could all the obvious… among other things. “however, not many would give up something so…valuable for a brother.”
